For the first time, Las Vegas participated in yesterday’s Earth Hour. On March 28, 2009 from 8:30pm – 9:30pm PST, the majority of the Strip went dark. It was eerie and cool at the same time. At Luxor, we turned off the Beam and all the lights on the pyramid. We almost looked invisible! Other iconic participants included the Welcome to Las Vegas Sign, Freemont Street Experience and the Bellagio Fountains.

Thanks to Vegas Rex, below are some really great pictures of Luxor during Earth Hour. You can see more of his Earth Hour pictures of the Las Vegas Strip here and some videos from the Las Vegas Sun here.

One reason I and a lot of others like Luxor is because of our unique shape. I mean, how many people can say, “I work for a hotel that’s shaped like a pyramid?” Outside of Vegas, not many ūüôā

With such a unique shape, the building also allows for some cool and creative outdoor ad placements. You can see some of them here.

For most of the building wraps, we partner with Sky Tag for the production and placement. This time was no different.

The ad is two-fold. Vice President of Luxor Marketing (and my boss), Brad Goldberg said, “We call this our ‘focus campaign’ with the goal being to drive people’s focus and attention on Luxor and Las Vegas.”

As we continue to move away from our Egyptian theme, this building wrap helps to remind people about the excitement, intrigue and mystique of both Luxor and Vegas.

“Now more than ever, we’re trying to get people to think about taking a break and to get away from the stress they may be encountering. We want to get them¬†thinking about Las Vegas as a primary and economical vacation and business destination,” Goldberg said.

This week, CES (Consumer Electronics Show) was in town. With it came a lot of Twitter folks like Chris Brogan, Justin Levy, Greg Verdino, Joesph Jaffe and more.

A few days pre-show, I saw Chris Brogan’s tweet asking if anyone could help get him a picture of himself standing on the TI Pirate Ship for his pirate theme.

Quickly, I replied to him saying, I’d try to help. Then, I went to work with PR to see if we could make it happen. Our PR team rocks. They get a multitude of calls and emails daily and sort through which requests make sense and which ones don’t.

On the surface, Chris’s request doesn’t make too much sense. While he’s considered press (anyone who has a blog is), he doesn’t blog about Vegas. Moreover, he wasn’t using the picture to promote MGM MIRAGE, TI or the show the boat is used in, Sirens of TI. Honestly, I thought PR might reject the request and told Chris and Justin just that.

However, PR is very supportive of our social media efforts and took that, as well as the fact that the request was coming from me (vs. an outside source) into account. To everyone’s excitement, Chris and his “pirate crew” got to board the Pirate Ship, The Song (one of several pirate ships TI owns) on Friday, January 9, 2009.

The result?

This article, new friends, a wonderful story about how brands can make a difference by using Social Media¬†and being “human aware” and of course,¬†the below picture.

New Year’s Eve in Las Vegas was nothing short of spectacular!

From people winning jackpots to Robbie Maddison and Evil Knieval’s son jumping over the Mirage volcano to a multitude of celebrities hosting parties at the night clubs, it was surely a night to remember and the perfect way to ring in 2009!

Of course, it wouldn’t be a party without fireworks and the ones viewed from Luxor were gorgeous!

I wrote and posted pictures of the Luxor Pyramid covered in snow yesterday here. But, our HR team got an even better picture! So much so, that I thought this new picture deserved it’s own post.

In all it’s snow covered glory… my “home” ūüôā

As crazy as it sounds, it snowed on the Las Vegas Strip today! In fact, it’s snowing so much that the LAS Airport shut down, roads closed and students have a Snow Day tomorrow!

According to the TV news, Las Vegas hasn’t seen this much snow in 30 years!

The coolest part of the day? The Pyramid started to become covered in snow. Because of it’s shape, it was one of the few buildings that held the snow in a way that you could really see it. If it snows more tonight, maybe we’ll get to go sledding down The Pyramid (just kidding, but wouldn’t that be fun?!).

Anyway, thanks to Twitter, I was able to compile a few pictures of what it looked like. They were all taken while driving, so the quality is a little poor, but they are all very cool! Enjoy.

Because Luxor is so diverse, from its staff to its venues, hearing only one “voice” on this blog would be an inaccurate portral of Luxor. So, I plan to work with employees and various departments to get as many different voices and Guest Posts as possible. Below is one from Kussette who works at Liquidity, the center bar at Luxor.

****************************************************************************************************************

Luxor was known for its Egyptian theme, hieroglyphics on the wall, mummies, pharaoh, sphinx, obelisk, RA, Nile and Nefertiti’s. Now, those were things of the past. The Luxor is reborn. There is a whole new different experience from what was ancient. We’re now more living in the present with a more lively and provocative atmosphere in the center bar, Liquidity and restaurant and nightclubs like LAX and CatHouse. We got the perfect hang out to talk and meet new people in Aurora– lobby bar. Why not try some refreshing cocktails on your first landing to Vegas. I recommend the Liquid Lemonade as one of the most refreshing cocktails invented. How about something different like a Strawberry Caprioskasfor the sweet tooth drinker or the popular signature drink Aurora which is fresh blueberries martini. It would be best to have it on Thurs-Mon from 8pm-6am. Don’t ask why, just take my word on it ūüėČ

Not to mention, Flight, the best hang out while waiting for flights departure in LAS airport or to go to LAX nightclub on Wed, Thurs, Fri or Sat. One should definitely try the flights such as the First Class Whiskey or First Class Tequila. You’ll be paying much less to try ultra premium spirits in this bar than any other bar ever. Such as Patron Platinum and Crown XR plus it comes with the most creative garnishes ever like beef¬†jerky for whiskeys and butterscotch candies for apple martinis. You name it they have the most eclectic menu out there.

In Liquidity, which is the center bar of it all, you can taste the slow dripping Absinthe.

Lastly, Criss Angel or Carrot Top might be the next person you see hanging out in one of the lounge or¬†nightclubs mentioned. There is more to come¬†at Luxor, like escalators,¬†Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition¬†and BODIES… The Exhibition and a whole bunch more for the ecstatic, energetic and full spirit crowd.
